Course content: Soil genesis, physical and chemical weathering. Soil-forming factors and processes. Soil morphology. Basic physical properties of soil. Water in soil, its forms, movement and assimilability to the plants. Soil air and soil temperature. Soil colloids and their properties. Soil sorption complex. Chemical properties of the soil. Soil organic matter. Soil microorganisms and their role in functioning of the soil. Fertility and abundance of soil. Evaluation of soil. The Polish Soil Classification System. Agricultural usefulness complexes. Protection of soils. Evolution of soils in holocene. Elements of Polish soils geography. Geography of soils of the world.
Learning outcomes: Teaching students about phenomena connected with genesis, functioning and degradation of soils. Understanding ecological role of soil in natural environment. Knowledge about needs and rules of protection of soils.
