Fracture mechanics MBM2S13010
Course content:
Introduction – historical topics. Basic types and fracture mechanisms. Linear-elastic fracture mechanics. Stress and strain distribution ahead of the crack tip and V-shape notch. Basic parameters for stress fields at the crack tip: stress intensity factors and J-integral invariant. Stress redistribution produced by plastic zone. Failure criteria for brittle and ductile materials – uniaxial and multiaxial monotonic loading states. Cyclically varying loads – some basic fracture criteria. Fatigue damage accumulation and crack propagation – well-known models. On some aspects in dynamic problems – rapid crack growth. Elements of experimental fracture mechanics – standard methods for determination of basic parameters.
Learning outcomes: predicting of fracture of structural elements loded by monotonic and fatigue loading.
