Forest Entomology II LN4024

Course content: General history of entomology. Characteristic of insects; influence of environmental factors on insect’s development and reproduction. Insects in forest biocenosis. Insect’s pathogens and entomophages. Sketch of systematics. Characteristics of chosen taxons. Pests of buds, seeds and cones. Insects of pine, spruce and other stands. Timber preservation. Introduction of alien species and possibilities of their acclimatization in Poland. Dynamics of populations and methods of controlling insects’ quantity. Role of insects in forest ecosystems. Protection of endangered species.

Learning outcomes: getting knowledge of basis of morphoogy, anatomy and bionomy of insects; ability to identify the most important forest species tree damages they cause; getting know chosen methods of predicting emergence of insects and pest control. Understanding the importance of insects in forest ecosystems and basis of protection of species in danger of extinction.
