Summer Semester 2019/20
Non-traditional Machining Processes IS-FME-00228
Description:
Definition and classification of non-traditional machining processes. Equipment and material processes:
- Basic of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), mechanism of metal removal, equipment: spark erosion generator, dielectric medium, wire feed control system, flushing. EDM process parameters: spark frequency, current and spark gap, surface finish, heat affected zone. Advantages, limitations and applications of EDM.
- Abrasive Jet Machining (AJM): introduction, equipment and process
of material removal, process variables. Process characteristics, applications,
advantages and limitations of this method.
- Plasma Arc Machining (PAM): introduction, generation of plasma, equipment, process parameters, process characteristics. Safety precautions, applications, advantages and limitations.
- Laser Beam Machining (LBM): introduction, generation of LASER beam, LBM parameters and characteristics. Advantages and limitations.
Aspects of selection of the non-traditional machining methods:
a) physical parameters of the process,
b) shape to be machined,
c) process capability,
d) economics of the processes.
