Course contents:
Sceintific and technical language: formal and informal English.
Basic and engineering sciences: introduction of concepts and names from mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, techbology etc.
Word formation - prefixes and suffixes in academic and technical vocabulary.
Etymology - words of Greek and Latin origin in academic language.
Professional English - concepts and vocabulary related to mechanics, e.g. the notion of force, friction, strength of matreials, wieght and energy, metrology, robotics, ICT etc.
Methodology, peculiarity of scientific investigation, experimentation, simulation.
Listening to short recordings related to academic and technical themes and recreation of selected parts in the form of a soundtrack. Making doctoral student's own studies - writing resumes and abstracts.

Learning outcomes
Doctoral student gets to know academic and technical terminology related to basic sciences and learn the key words and their pronunciation.
Doctoral student gets to know the way to form words in academic language (prefixes and suffixes), as well as their derivation - etymology.
Doctoral student is able to understand a multimedia recording (both popular and scientific, and scientific), and after listening to it for a few times is able to recreate its soundtrack.
Doctoral students is able to write a short academic resume or abstract.
Assessment criteria
Oral examination - translating and pronouncing selected academic and technical words and expressions. Written vocabulary test - examining doctoral student's ability to understand the mechanisms of forming academic and technical words. Creating a soundtrack of a selected multimedia popular and scientific recording (semester assignment).
Preparing a resume or abstract of doctoral student's own Master's dissertation (semester assignment)
