Course content:Materials used in timber structures.Service classes and load duration classes.Design strength characteristics for wood and timber derivative boards.Ultimate limit states: compression and tension, influence of buckling, bending including slenderness ratio, shear and torsion. Combined states of stresses.Design of metal dowel type connections: failure modes and load carrying capacity. The other types of connections in timber engineering.Design of composite beams. Design of roof structures.Timber trusses, frames and arches - design and detailing. Wood-framed with sheathing buildings.Masonry units and characteristics. Characteristic and design strength of masonry.Load bearing capacity of masonry vertically loaded. Laterally loaded masonry. Design models. Design of composite concrete-masonry sections. Cracking of masonry.Durability of timber and masonry structures.
