Structures AW5017
Course content:
Implementation of triad function-form-construction in two scales (small, medium or large) from different materials (wood, metal and brittle monolith, e.g. concrete or glass). Writing compact structural specification of a design task – function, loads resulting from the function and the environment, critical combinations of loads, connected with the environment. Choice of the structure form and building the scheme of the structure. Analysis of the way of construction work. Matching materials to the way of work. Establishing the simplest structure to implement. Establishing the structure with the lowest material cost.

Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes:
Reaching abilities to apply issues of structural mechanics in design practice. Deepening skills in determining schemes of design objects, selecting loads, analysing the way of work, shaping various forms of structure from different materials depending on the function and the way of work.
Assessment criteria
Rules of assessment:
Students must execute 2 projects. Execution of the project includes: agreeing on a individual topic of the project, a minimum of two revisions, an oral defence.
Each project is evaluated on the scale of 0-50 points. Points are awarded according to the following criteria:
innovation 0-3 points
the level of difficulty 1-10 points
the quality of analysis, the quantity and the quality of the revisions 0-15 points
the quality of the presentation 0-7 points
answers during the defence 0-15 points
FINAL GRADE
5.0 (very good) -> Execution of 2 projects and the total sum of points ≥ 86
4.5 (better than good) -> Execution of 2 projects and the total sum of points from the interval [72,86)
4.0 (good) -> Execution of 2 projects and the total sum of points from the interval [58,72)
3.5 (better than satisfactory) -> Execution of 2 projects and total sum of points from the interval [44,58)
3.0 (satisfactory) -> Execution of 2 projects and the total sum of points from the interval [30,44)
2.0 (unsatisfactory/fail) -> Execution of less than 2 projects or the total sum of points < 30
where () denotes an open interval and [] is a closed interval.
