Heat and surface treatment of medical materials and products MIBS16009
Course content: Characteristics of surfaces of solids. Surface layers. The top layer. Coating. Preparation of the technological surface layers. Vacuum deposition techniques by physical methods - PVD. Fluorescent techniques and CVD vacuum deposition. Laser techniques. Classification of methods of heat treatment of medical materials. Overview of metallic biomaterials: implantation steels, Ti alloys, Co alloys, shape memory alloys and others. Theoretical aspects of heat treatment of implant materials. Analysis of two-and three-component phase equilibrium systems of selected medical materials. Technological aspects of heat treatment. Thermal expansion, thermal conductivity. Oxidation of materials used heat treatment of medical materials. Advanced methods of research of structures, materials and medical devices.
Learning outcomes: A student knows the basics of surface treatment and heat treatment of medical materials.

Learning outcomes
A student: lists, classifies and describes the basic methods of heat treatment and surface of biomaterials,
performs measurements of the properties of selected materials and coatings, and develops the measurement results,
can use known methods to evaluate materials and coatings,
applies the principles of safety,
is able to work in a team.
Assessment criteria
Lecture - examination;
Lab exercises. - Test for lab exercises., a report from the lab exercises., an observation of work in the classroom lab.,the discussion on the report of the exercises.
