Winter Semester 2010/11
Strength of Materials MIBS03020A
Course content:
Objectives of strength of materials. Basic definitions: internal forces, stresses, strains. Problems of tension (compression) of bars. Basic mechanical properties of material. Cross-sectional properties: static moments, moments of inertia. Free torsion of bars of any cross-section. Pure and transverse bending, proportional and non-proportional bending. Analysis of stress and strain state – generalized Hooke’s law. Principal stresses and strains and principal directions. Basic strength hypothesis. Some problems of stability of structures.
Learning outcomes: skill of making diagrams of internal forces, calculating stresses and strains in uniaxial and complex loading states, formulating of strength and rigidity conditions, obtaining critical loading and designing of typical structural elements.
