Networks classification. Data transmission model. The concept of communication protocol. Encapsulation of data units. Methods of bits transmission. Types and properties of the transmission medium. The concept of physical addressing. Types and principle of operation of hubs and switches. Frame construction. Datalink access algorithms. Logical addressing and its implementation in the IPv4 and IPv6 protocols. Routing mechanisms in IP networks. The overall structure of the Internet. Internal and external routing protocols. DNS: the design and operation. Transport Layer and its tasks. Other layered models. Wireless Networks: 802.11 WLAN specification. Introduction to wide area networks. Data transmission using analogue and digital fixed-line telephony. The DSL family. Frame Relay technology. Asynchronous Transfer Mode. Network traffic shaping. The concept of Quality of Service.
