Renewable energy sources DW08MB
• Basic principles of energy conversion. Elementary problems of generation of electric power, heating and cooling from renewable energy sources under polish and european conditions. Renewable energy resources.
• Theoretical principles of conversion of wind kinetic energy to electric energy along with wind performance characteristics and power generation station characteristics. Exemplary designs of wind power generation stations applied in Poland. Assessment of national wind power resources. Aspects of collaboration of national wind power generation stations with national electric power grid system.
• Theoretical principles of conversion of kinetic energy of water flow into mechanical energy of water turbines. Basic principles of action and reaction water turbines. Model of energy conversion in hydropower plant. Exemplary designs of national hydropower plants, especially hydropower stations of small power output. Estimation of national resources of hydropower of rivers in aspects of development of low-head hydropower stations. Assessment of economiuc effectiveness of hydropower stations. Aspects of collaboration of hydropower stations with national electric power grid system. Basic principles of operation of pumped strorage power stations.
• Theoretical principles of geothermal heat usage; model of thermal extraction of geothermal resources. Assessment of national resources of available geothermal energy. Exemplary cases of geothermal heating with application of absorption heat transformers. Cogeneration power plants with application of ORC power systems. Aspects of economic, energy, and environmental effectiveness of cogeneration systems for generation of heat and power from geothermal resources.
• Thermodynamics principles of operation of heat pumps with application of ground thermal resources. Exemplary cases of national applications of compression heat pumps of small, medium and large capacities. Sorption heat pumps. Assessment of economic and environmental effectiveness of heat pumps. Aspects of collaboration of heat pumps with heating and cooling systems.

Learning outcomes
Student is able to:
- describe the basic energy converion processes with application of renewable energy resources;
- define basic notions in the field of renewable thermal engineering;
- perform the basic calculations of energy conversion processes;
- knows the basic principles of operation of fluid-flow machinery for wind and hydropower engineering.
Assessment criteria
Lecture: written test with 3 problems. Students are proivided with the examination problems by the lecturer during the lectures. The score for receive the credit with this course is 50%.
