Fluid Mechanics D13511
Introduction. Definition of fluid. Scope of fluid mechanics. Basic Equations. Methods of Analysis: system and control volume, methods of description: Langrangenian and Eulerian methods of description. Fundamental concepts: fluid as a continuum, velocity field, stress field: surface and body forces, stress at a point, stress field in a fluid. Newtonian fluid, viscosity.
Fluid statics: the basic hydrostatic equation. The basic pressure-heigh relation, integration of the basic pressure-heigh relation.
Fluid dynamics. Bernoulli equation for incompressible viscous flow. Fluid velocity and mass flow measurement: stagnation pressure probes: Pitot tube and Pitot-static tube. Flowmeters based on acceleration of fluid stream: orifice, flow nozzle and Venturi flowmeters.
Laminar and turbulent flows. Dimensionless Groups: the Reynolds and Mach numbers. Incompressible viscous flow: laminar and tuburlent velocity profiles during a flow in a tube. Pressure loses during a flow of viscous liquid: major and minor losses. Friction factor for a laminar and turubulen flows, Moody diagram. Cavitation phenomena. Pump in a pipe system. Multiple path systems. Energy and hydraulic grade lines.
