Theory of Urban and Regional Planning 2 AUM2019

Course content:The problems of transport in cities. Transport infrastructure as factor shaping physical structure. The characteristics of the various means of transport. Considerations of design layouts. Criteria for evaluating solutions. Modern communication centres in the city. The issues of environmental and sustainable development of cities. The issues of environmental and sustainable development of cities. The balancing of spatial development. The System of open space. Aspects of the protection of the landscape. The continuity of the natural system as a criterion for planning. Analysis and programming in urbanism. Problems of modern cities in different parts of the world. Sustainable community vs. urban sprawl. Shrinking cities is a new phenomenon of shrinking cities. Tool to control the development of cities.

Term 2012Z:

1. Description of subjects of lectures:
The role of cities in spatial policy. Critics of the 19th Century city as basis of the theory of contemporary town planning. Cities as centers of growth. Economical basis of the development of contemporary cities. Cities in european policy.

2. Problems of modern cities. Cities as the main human environment. Similarities: scale, sub-urbanism, increasing of social problems, traffic problems. Differencies: natural conditions, demographics, level of social stratification, ethnic gettos, level of technical equipment.

3. The problems of transport in cities. Transport infrastructure as factor shaping physical structure. The characteristics of the various measures of transport. Considerations of design layouts. Criteria for evaluating solutions. Traffic calming systems. Priority for public transport. Modern communication centres in the city.

4. Aspects of natural environment in living of cities. Environmental assessment issues. The System of open spaces. Aspects of landscape protection. The continuity of the natural system as a criterion for planning.

5. The issues of environmental and sustainable development of cities. The balancing of spatial development. Balanced neighbourhoods.
Analysis and programming in urbanism. Balanced communities vs. urban sprawl. Urban sprawl characteristics - expectations and costs. Possibilites to react.

6. Management of city space. Aspects of urban management. Tools to manageof the development of the citiy: creation of vitality and attractivity, large urban projects as tool of intervention. Mega-structures: town-in-town. Urban marketing.

7. Shrinking cities as a new phenomenon. Perspectives of development of cities. The case of Detroit. The case of cities of the Eastern Germany. Integrated planning. Cittaslow movement.
